Kinematics vs. Industry
Interactive By-Motion Mechanism Finder
Whether you are building a specialty marine hatch, an outdoor kiosk, or a clinical workstation, your gas spring specification is governed by hinge kinematics. Select how your assembly moves below to see the exact load behavior and series match.
Gravity pulls the lid closed; the gas strut crosses the moment arm to lift and hydraulically brake the final degrees of travel.
Top-Hinged Upward Lids & Canopies
In overhead lids, vehicle tailgates, CNC guards, and marine hatches, gravity pulls the panel shut while the effective lever arm shortens as the lid rises. Standard undamped cylinders can accelerate into the upper mechanical stop and stress the hinges.
As the panel folds down toward the user, applied surface weight pulls outward in tension on the piston rod.
Bottom-Hinged Drop-Down Panels & Fold-Down Tables
When a panel hinges at the bottom and folds downward toward the operator, gravity assists opening rather than closing. Once deployed horizontally, any weight placed on the surface tries to pull the piston rod outward in extension.
Lower pivot geometry converts upper torso or frame torque into axial compression or tension along the locking strut.
Pivoting Backrests & Articulated Tilt Frames
Mechanisms rotating around a lower pivot pin experience dynamic load reversals as user posture or frame angle shifts. Depending on whether the application prioritizes ergonomic shock absorption or zero-deflection clinical support, we pair the pivot with elastic or oil-rigid locking.
Axial guide rails absorb side-loads while an internal NTC double-tube or NTB single-tube cylinder locks height rigidly.
Vertical Telescoping Columns & Pedestals
Assemblies moving straight up and down inside a linear guide column require two critical properties: strict protection against eccentric side-loads and a flat force curve (low $k$-ratio) so the operator does not have to fight excessive upward force at the bottom of the stroke.
Diagonal strut placement inside a four-bar parallelogram matches the changing cosine torque curve across the arc.
Counterbalanced Pantograph & Four-Bar Linkages
Multi-link parallelogram arms carry payloads whose effective torque changes non-linearly with the cosine of the arm angle. By tuning the pivot coordinates, gas volume ($k$-ratio), and low-friction seal package ($F_R$), the payload floats weightlessly at any height.
Engineering Selection Guide
Match Your Application Load Direction to the Right Series
Every OEM mechanism comes down to two questions: does the assembly need to lock mid-stroke, and which direction does the external load push or pull on the piston rod?
Internal nitrogen charge supplies the lifting force, while hydraulic oil and valve geometry control whether the rod glides to a damped stop, cushions with elastic give, or locks rock-solid against tension or compression.
| Series Code | Locking & Motion | Stroke & Force (F1) | Rod Diameter | Primary Industry Mechanisms | Series Page |

Application & Sizing Questions

How do I choose between elastic locking, rigid locking, and non-locking lift gas springs?
Match the cylinder to how your mechanism moves and supports load. Choose NTG elastic locking gas springs when the user needs stepless positioning with a gentle, shock-absorbing cushion, such as office, automotive, aircraft, or train seats. Choose NTA, NTB, or NTC rigid oil-locking struts when the locked assembly cannot tolerate bounce, such as hospital beds, surgical tables, standing desks, or tilting workbenches. Choose NTF or NTZ compression gas springs when a hood, cabinet lid, overhead bin, or machine guard simply lifts open to a fixed stop.
Should I specify extension rigid locking (NTA) or compression rigid locking (NTB / NTC)?
Follow the direction the external load acts on the piston rod while locked. If weight tries to pull the piston rod outward, such as a raised hospital bed backrest, recliner sofa back, or fold-down cabin table, specify NTA rigid extension locking (50 to 1,250 N). If weight pushes downward to compress the rod inward, such as a standing desk, examination table, or press fixture, specify single-tube NTB (20 to 350 mm stroke, 50 to 500 N) or double-tube NTC (50 to 500 mm stroke, 70 to 450 N).
When should I choose a double-tube NTC locking spring over a single-tube NTB spring?
Both NTB and NTC lock rigidly in compression under downward loads. Specify the twin-tube NTC series when your design requires a longer stroke relative to the installed cylinder length (50 to 500 mm travel) and a lower spring-rate force increase, such as telescoping mobile medical carts, overbed tables, and railway sleeper berths.
What industry compliance, washdown, and duty-cycle benchmarks can Newton gas springs support?
We configure cylinders and materials around your regulatory and environmental requirements, including medical disinfectant wipe-down resistance and CPR mechanical override readiness, aerospace and rail cabin interior standards (such as FAR 25.853, EN 45545, and NFPA 130 alignment), ASTM B117 salt-spray corrosion resistance with 304 or 316 stainless steel for marine and food-processing washdowns, and high-cycle fatigue testing aligned with BIFMA furniture benchmarks.
